During the 2006-07 school year, the LOAS Initiative announced grants totaling $715,000 to the following DPS elementary, K-8, charter, and middle schools:
TESTIMONIALS
(from 2005-06)
|
“In both our programs, students worked as teams to accomplish goals, whether it was winning a soccer game, creating a meal, competing in a poetry contest, or finding the best way to take a picture of a fence. Students learned to work together in a wide variety of situations.”
- Tom Elliott, principal
Cowell Elementary School
|
“An after-school setting allows many of our students the opportunity to relax
while learning. New appreciations are developed while students and teachers
express themselves and senses of humors are revealed.”
- Kelly Garcia-Fuller, teacher
Ford Elementary School
|
“We have been able to offer creative clubs which provide our students with opportunites to participate in activities
which are not available through the traditional school curriculum including
photography, sewing, yoga and fitness, jazz band and Photoshop.”
- Sarah Krieger, YMCA
Hamilton Middle School
|
“After getting help with their homework, the students are able to go back to school the next day and feel comfortable and confident they understand the previous lesson and are ready to move on. Helping the students in an atmosphere that is still school, but does not have the feeling of school, is beneficial to breaking down barriers that affect the level of student learning.”
- Whitney Hooks, Summer Scholars, Mitchell K-8 School
|
“I cannot stress enough the benefits that the tutors provide for our children.
Most of our male students have an adult male tutor to become a friend and mentor. This is a very beneficial relationship for our student population,
who don’t see many male role models in their home life.”
- John E. Bellis, teacher
Wyman Elementary
|
“Each Tuesday students are given a logic problem to solve. When figured out correctly, students have this look of determination that they can do anything if they put their mind to it. This activity has built confidence with all of the students involved.”
- Eric Hicks, Summer Scholars
Monclair Elementary School
|
“With every minute of help outside of the classroom, performance in the classroom tends to be exponentially better.”
- Antonio Rosendo, teacher
Remington Elementary School
|
“Several students, when prompted to write about their favorite day
have composed a piece that tells a story about their after-school program.”
Travis Bruner, teacher
Stedman Elementary School
|
“We can see students being more confident in everyday activities.
You can walk through the halls and hear them talking about what
they are going to do after school and how good they are getting at it.”
- Stacy Miller, Report Author
