Principal Leadership Development

There's an old saying: "show me a great school, and I will show you a great principal."

Research shows that a principal’s ability to oversee and ensure high-quality teaching and learning in each classroom is a critical driver of student achievement.

That’s why the DPS Foundation raises funding for the district’s principal leadership program, including the following components:

Summer Leadership Institute

Each summer, all DPS principals and assistant principals attend a leadership institute where they learn about the latest research for improving classroom instruction and driving student achievement. Principals also learn critical management skills, share best practices with other district schools and meet with their school’s leadership teams to begin planning for the following school year.

Year-round Leadership Development

Throughout the school year, principals and assistant principals participate in leadership seminars and trainings that provide them with tools to assess their school’s progress, make improvements in instruction, and continue learning from other principals about how to achieve success.

Principal Mentoring

All new DPS principals are provided with a mentor who can help them address challenges during their first year on the job. Mentors direct new principals to resources and provide a non-judgmental source of advice.
