Fit Fun & Literacy is an after-school program in nine Denver Public Schools (DPS) that incorporates physical fitness and nutrition with reading and math. The program specifically targets our highest-need elementary schools in which at least 80% of students are eligible for the free or reduced meal program.
Fit, Fun & Literacy began in 2004 in response to the critical need for supervised activities for students in the after-school hours. The program has expanded to be one of the most consistent after-school options in DPS, running five days per week from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day of the school year.
Fit, Fun & Literacy serves a critical role not only for the students it engages, but for families who otherwise do not have access to affordable childcare at the end of the traditional school day.
The program provides students with an opportunity to receive additional academic help, engage in physical activities, increase their literacy and math skills, build positive relationships, and learn about nutrition and healthy eating habits. Most importantly, it provides a safe, supportive environment during the afterschool hours.
During the 2009-10 school year, approximately 400 students participated in the program. Every Fit, Fun & Literacy site has a waiting list, reflecting the need and capacity for program growth given increased funding.
“These programs are wonderful learning alternatives to television. Our parents want this kind of involvement for their children,”
Veronica Benavidez, principal
Trevista at Horace Mann.
