Thanks to the A to Z Fund, ECE students at Oakland Elementary built their own collection of books, promoting early literacy and giving students access to literacy tools over the summer months.

The A to Z Fund sponsored a family book fair, allowing students to choose up to six books to take home with them. Many of the families at Oakland Elementary School cannot afford their own home libraries. The school has a 90% free and reduced lunch rate, indicating a high level of poverty among the students served.

As a result of the book fair, dozens of children now have a collection of books to read at home, and to share with their siblings. Early literacy is a critical benchmark to long-term academic success. Held in May 2011, the book fair additionally ensured that students have access to literacy tools over the summer months. Loss of proficiency for students who are not engaged in summer academic or enrichment activities is often referred to as "The Summer Slide." As a result of this grant, the children at Oakland Elementary will be able to read with their families and continue to develop their literacy skills regardless of the programs they have access to over the summer months.
The A to Z Fund provides grants to individual schools for programs and activities that go beyond the school’s limited budget. The fund ensures that all DPS students have equal opportunity to participate in enriching learning experiences.
